This is the first time for the Zuiderdam to disembark at Ishigaki Island, Japan and I sure am happy she did. Many travelers only visit the major cities of a country and fail to find the hidden charms of more remote destinations. Ishigaki Island is one of those gems.
By definition, Ishigaki Island is actually closer to Taiwan than Japan (only 152 miles away) and thus is influenced by Taiwan culture. Of note is their cuisine, which is most famous for its black cattle thought to have originally been brought from China as far back as the Yayoi period (300 AD) Although I did not try it, I am told that it rivals the famous Japanese Kobe beef.
Ishigaki Island is rich with tradition. Hidden in a park, with stone lanterns lining the walkway to its entrance was the Kabira Kannon Temple. A ship brought a young boy with his family to Ishigaki Island and when he explored the island he was touched by its beauty. The boy became a monk and years later returned to the island and built the temple in honor of his visit.
And of course, sometimes the beauty is right above you if you will only take the time to look upward.
Japan is known for its beautiful sunsets, but Ishigaki Island is renowned for its high-quality stargazing. It is designated as an International Dark Sky Area. Eighty-Four of the Eighty-Eight known constellations are visible from Ishigaki Island. You enjoy light-pollution-free skies filled with unbelievable moon views. I’ve included one for your pleasure.
