Most travelers bypass Dalian, China enroute between Shanghai and Beijing. As our companies are registered in Delaware, we maintain a virtual office in Wilmington, Delaware. No one thinks of stopping in Wilmington (although it is a lovely city) enroute between NYC and DC. So it is with Dalian, China.

The great part about being on a World Cruise is that you visit ports that are not often frequented. On her initial visit, Zuiderdam is the first cruise ship to visit Dalian in four years. Media, government officials and the Govenor of Dalian boarded the ship. It is marine tradition to present a welcome plaque to a cruise ship’s first disembarkment in a new country/city. Military installments marched up and down the pier in formation upon our departure.

Dalian is a very manageable city to navigate. Unlike other large Chinese cities, the transportation system is excellent, less crowded and there are no traffic jams. Although they did try to mimic the skyline of Shanghai, it was a much less sensory overload.

Darian has a very interesting history. It was actually owned by Russia at one time. Russia had a particular interest in this region because it had the potential to develop an ice-free port. Russia actually linked Darian with the Trans-Siberian Railway. This occupation by Russia is reflected in the architecture, the signage and even souvenirs, such as the Matryoshka dolls.

Another highlight in Dalian is its outstanding zoo. There everyone wants to see the mammal that is native to China. Easily recognized, surviving primarily on bamboo, this mammal has difficulty in reproduction because although two cubs may be born only one will survive.

Finally, Dalian’s International fashion Festival has become world famous. Held in September each year, the festival attracts the world’s top fashion designers. It is said to rival the Haute Couture in Paris, France. and the Settimana della mode in Milan, Italy.
