Welcome to Shimizu, Japan.

Today we docked in Shimizu, Japan, a beautiful port considered the gateway to Mount Fuji. I think Shimizu must be the friendliest city in Japan. As soon as we left the ship, a large group of Japanese volunteers helped us with directions. Crossing guards were ready to stop the non-existent traffic when we crossed the streets. Residents of Shimizu seemed to appear out of nowhere to make sure we didn’t miss any turns through this compact city that is primarily known for its view of Mount Fuji.

It was a cool day with low cloud cover. We are here a month before the high tourist season of cherry tree blossoms, and the cool weather may prolong their blossoming. It isn’t unusual that views of Japan’s tallest mountain are obscured by clouds. The Shimizu Harbor Cruise honestly offers one of the best Fuji photo angles in Japan. However, if it’s cloudy, you won’t see Fuji. As we walked into town the Harbor Cruise advertised close-up views, “weather permitting.” The crew set quietly not trying to lore any tourists on a 40-minute cruise not worth their while. As I said, a very friendly city.

Luckily, we were able to capture this stunning photo of Mount Fuji during our visit on March 1, 2024.

As we left the port a crowd standing behind a banner saying, “See You Again in Shimizu,” beckoned us to return again. Most heartwarming to me was a group of senior citizens in wheelchairs. Luckily, the weather had gotten warmer.

Also, as we left, the clouds parted and the mountain popped out – although still hiding its peak. It made for a spectacular departure!

Thanks for traveling with us.
