Qaqortoq, Greenland…

This is a tender port and because of storm conditions in trying to transfer passengers on to the tenders and maneuver the tenders to makeshift docking areas we have been rerouted away from Qaqortoq, Greenland and will sail to our next scheduled ports St. Anthony and St. John, Newfoundland, Canada. This was the view from our cabin this morning and as close as we would be able to get to Greenland. These photos were taken from the Deck 7, so the waves are stronger than they look. And I still don’t see any green!

Qaqortoq is a small port with only 3,000 inhabitants yet it is still the largest town in Southern Greenland which gives you an idea of how remote this country is from the rest of the world. The word Qaqortoq means “white” in the Intuit language which reflects the white granite landscape. (not green!) The main attraction to see here is the “Furhouse” which shows how the Intuit culture loves fur. However, it doesn’t open until the summer season which in this area of the world begins in late June so we would have missed this fury experience.

We hate to miss any port but for the safety of the passengers Captain Adams made the right decision. And I did wonder to myself how we would be greeted by the natives as representing the country who is trying to buy your country from you!

And if we do buy Greenland Chongae and I are not moving here.

Brrrr…way too cold!

Thanks for traveling with us.
